My college readiness was of the utmost importance to me. Surely enough, The Uptown Educational Foundation assisted me in my struggles. For example, SAT was one of my worst fears. My PSAT and SAT scores were below what I expected, but after receiving SAT prep through the The Foundation, not only did I increase my score to where I felt it should have been, but I became more assured in tackling other aspects of what was expected of me. Furthermore, something that I really wanted to excel on was my college essay. One of the most challenging things to do when writing is collecting all thoughts and portrayals of the story onto paper. After continuously going back and rewriting my personal statement a plethora of times through the solid connection of The Foundation, I was able to finally submit my work to colleges with such a proud smile and a gleaming aura of confidence. I knew that that essay had such value to me and it portrayed all of my thoughts the way I wanted the college admission offices to read it. Besides the application process, the scholarships that were awarded to me became pivotal in assisting me with some of my financial struggles. As I entered college, I used those funds for many essential purposes. The biggest benefit for me was the travel expense. Traveling to and from college without a car was not easy for me. I used some of the scholarship funds to actually help me get to my future which would be St. Lawrence University located in Canton, New York. The main reason why I was prepared for the SATs and the college application process in the winter of 2019 was because of Mr. Murphy and The Uptown Education Foundation. In my junior year, the Uptown Education Foundation helped me by providing me and my peers with a SAT tutor and a free chance to take the SAT a second time. Due to this, I was able to increase my SAT score from 1320 to 1430 when I took it again—an 110 point increase on my SAT exam. Additionally, we were given assistance in creating our personal statement, the most important part of the college application process, in return for us tutoring sophomores. At the time I had been struggling to create a succinct and effective personal statement for months and with the support of the Uptown Education Foundation I was able to create a personal statement that I will always be proud of. Finally, I was provided with an advisor who helped me throughout the beginning of the college application process, making the entire ordeal much easier. Overall, the aid that the Foundation provided increased my chances of getting into Dartmouth and made the entirety of the college application process more bearable. The benefits of my participation in the Foundation didn’t end with my graduation from high-school either. After graduating, I received a scholarship to help with covering college tuition and, incidentally, the tutoring that I did earlier became useful; I helped my friends during my gap year by editing their essays using the skills I acquired through my prior tutoring experience. Despite how rigorous BU is known to be, I have felt more than prepared for the work I've been receiving. The Uptown Educational Foundation has been preparing me to be where I am now since my junior year of high school. When I first got accepted to The Uptown Foundation SAT prep course, I was committed to all the coursework and preparation and was able to raise my score up nearly 100 points. The Foundation provided me with multiple Kaplan SAT Prep books, a free online course, free classes and free practice exams. During senior year, I was provided ample assistance on my college applications, my personal statement and college supplements. I went from having no idea what I wanted to write about to being extremely proud of all my essays. I had help through every draft and my essays would not have been as successful as they were had I not received the help of the Foundation. The Foundation also assisted me with a substantial scholarship that helped me to cover the costs of all my textbooks and school supplies making my transition to freshman year much more financially comfortable. Not only did Th Foundation fund SAT prep for me and several other students, they also paid the fees for us to take the test a second time to improve our scores. And that's exactly what happened to me. My score increased by eighty points, and made all the difference; it placed me in a great position for all my schools. We also all met frequently after school to work on applications and sometimes with the help of our mentor, "Aunt Jackie." She and I had meaningful conversations and she was more than willing to offer optimal advice on narrowing my college list, editing my resume, and completing a brag sheet. As if the UEF wasn’t generous enough already, I and other students were awarded a $1,000 scholarship to aid our college expenses. To put it simply, the UEF created a sense of solace and balance in my personal and academic life.
